Me Write Pretty One Day :: Finding Your Voice For a More Impactful Message

The other day, I got an email reply to one of my newsletter, saying something not-so-flattering along the line of not digging my writing style.

At first, I felt pretty crappy. I actually curled up into a ball on the couch. Then I realized it’s my itty bitty shitty committee raring its ugly head – I have this tendency to look for approval and acknowledgement from others, from outside of me!

Here is the thing –
I CHOOSE to write the way I write because it is how I express myself.
I CHOOSE to communicate with my peeps in this manner.
I CHOOSE to “Make Art Have Fun” in my biz through my writing
(because if I can’t do that, I might as well find a j.o.b.)

I want my readers to feel that when they read my stuff, it’s like chatting with me across the table at Starbucks or Peet’s.

You see, if you want to read boring business or academic writing, I can give that to you. Although English is technically my second language, I don’t lack experience in formal writing. A few examples: I wrote myself into Yale College and then Harvard grad school. I got mostly A’s for my 20+-pagers during my stint in the ivory towers. I spent 10 years in the corporate world banging out formal proposals and contracts. I used to write about 50 Fortune 500 client-facing emails a day communicating online marketing and website project related stuff. But if I write that way, I will probably get bored out of my pants and you won’t see me writing anymore. That would be no fun for anyone.

I am also a wee bit ADD – I can’t sit still to watch a 2-hour movie, I can’t seem to focus on my own plate of food when I eat out (I would start poking at my husband’s plate, or I would just order 5 appetizers), nor can I read and proof-read anything 3 times. After I finish writing something, I would read it over like 0.75 times before something more fun and creative pops into my head that I want to take action on right away. And off I go.

Imperfect ActionI think imperfect action beats perfect inaction 99% of the time. I think that’s how I got my biz up and running and profitable the moment I started it – whipping up a website over a weekend and announced the birth of slideberry.

If I worry about whether people are going to like my writing, I will still be sitting on the idea of newsletter rather than sending out my weekly communication. Yes, I get unsubs and not everyone digs my style. That’s ok, I am getting my message out and I know for every person my stuff “pokes at”, there are 2 people out there who appreciate my style and my message.

I would rather be Aztec chocolate with bacon and chili,
than plain old vanilla with stale cherry.

Enough about me  – what about you?

  • Are you willing to let go of the fear of being judged by others so you can let yourself, your message, your opinion and your style shine through?
  • Are you willing to risk a couple of people not digging you so you can have more loyal fans?
  • Are you ready to take action, dive in and stop worrying being judged, or making mistakes?
