Get Your Business Plan Done in 2 Hours (or less)

If you are traveling from point A to point B, it would be very helpful to actually know where you are going and what route you are going to take to get to your destination. Same for your business – if you want to stop doing “busy work” that merely gets you running in circles, the best way is to have a plan. You can project out 6 months, 12 months, or to the end of the year. Then you can go back to put more details around the goals and action items for the upcoming few months.

Business plan doesn’t have to be a 2-week, 80-page event, especially if your business is in its early stage and things are changing rapidly. You want some ideas, some goals, but you also want to remain nimble – you don’t want to feel like you are being locked down by a document that you are reluctant to change because you have invested so much time and energy into creating it.

Confession: I am never the kind with a lot of patience on creating document after document, so I have be putting off creating a marketing plan until recently, I came across a one-page marketing plan sample by Natalie Sisson. The template was so simple that I was able to pull my thoughts, vision and projections together in less than 2 hours – it was extremely helpful and I want to share the topics covered by this template with you:

  • Mission
  • Business Goals (make them S.M.A.R.T.)
  • Business Strategies or Objectives (i.e. what you need to do to achieve your business goals)
  • Income/Revenue Projection
  • Cost Projection (Income/Revenue minus cost will give you a sense whether your business is profitable)
  • Total Yearly Budget (that will come from your cost projection)
  • Current Income Streams
  • Future Income Streams (if you are looking to grow your revenue, you probably want to explore additional streams of income)
  • Personal Credentials (put all your experience and qualification together, including where you are published or featured on the media. You can uncover ways to synthesize your knowledge and experience to create unique new products and services. This can also show you how far you have come and be a great confidence booster – if you need it)
  • Personal Growth Goals (i.e. skills you want to build)
